The Arts

Everyone knows there are projects that are pointless. There are books teachers give us to read that have seemingly no meaning other than to waste 243 pages of our lives. Fahrenheit 451 was not one of those books. It was shocking and altogether disturbing to me how similar a story that was written 50 years ago could be to today.
The point of the book is not that we should read all the time. The point is not even that we have to read. The point is that when we emerge ourselves too deeply in the world of technology, it's easy to loose ourselves and relationships.
The reason that Fahrenheit 451 focuses on books is because of what they have inside them. They share truths about the world, things that we need to look at, things that we need to change. Books are a form of self-expression. The author expresses his or her emotions onto a page, where characters share their emotions passions and struggles, which makes it to the reader. Books are all about self-expression. When you think about it, if the thing we really need from books is the act of self-expression, without complete cooperation from all living people, we could never loose it. People express themselves in more ways than just literature. Take a closer look, slow down, and you may find that the things we need from books are all around us. I call it The Arts.

The Characters

It all started with a thought from a girl named Clarisse. Although she soon died, she left Montag with a new world of possibilities. She taught him what it was like to slow down and ask questions. She showed him what it was like to rub a dandelion on his chin. To taste the rain. To question why instead of how. By doing these simple things Clarisse gave Montag the biggest gift you could possibly give someone: a chance at a meaningful life.

Beatty: Beatty is the one in the book that extremely smart and well-read. Yet he was the fire chief, the one promoting the burning of knowledge and partaking in it. A red margarita represents Beatty because he was the first person to introduce the fact that drugs and alcohol were accepted in their society, he was the chief for over 30 years, and because in the end the only way he could see out of his unhappy life was a gun.
Clarisse: The white sugar cookies represent Clarisse who was represented in the book multiple times as being very white and pale. She was almost like the angel in the book, as she guided Montag onto the right path in his life.
Faber: These chocolate mint cookies represent Faber who is often associated with the color green. He's the character that really represents knowledge.Faber was always there for Montag, and showed him for the first time what a real relationship could be like.
Montag: Montag is a character that is very much molded and sculpted from the people he met on his journey. The bottom is the meringue, representing Montag who was cracked and not really sure what he was doing with his life. Topped with whip cream, Clarisse, who started helping Montag to glue the pieces he seemed to be missing from his life before, together. On top is apple, representing Clarisse and the lasting impact she had on Montag. Along with Faber, the kiwi, who showed Montag for the first time ever what it was like to have a relationship. Lastly was Beatty, a man who took in so much knowledge, but could no longer survive in a society compressed of it. Every hero needs someone to look at, and strive not to end up like. In Montag's case, the person really wasn't so different from himself.

Rick Tramonto

When you have a passion, there's nothing that should stop you from following it. Rick Tramonto, a now extremely famous chef, started life with a dad in jail. He began life with little to nothing. He dropped out of high school and ended up getting his first job at the first Wendy's. The food buisness became the thing Rick clung to. And for the rest of his life he chased it. Two years after starting at Wendy's he moved on to become a cook at The Scotch & Sirloin, leading to his first real culinary experience at the Strathallen Hotel. He chased his dream. He followed his dreams, leaving resteraunts when he felt it was time for him to learn something new. Now, Rick has published seven successful cookbooks. He's world renouned and currently has three high end restaurants. Rick has been on Top Chef Masters, Season 2. Tramonto, like many other pastry chefs, had abused drugs at a point in his life. Through out his time spent in the food industry, Rick discovered that the abuse was only holding him back. Like he fought through life, he fought through the drug abuse, and made it out.
